AVG Antivirus 2017 Review

AVG Top 10 Best Antivirus

AVG Antivirus 2017 automatically protects you from continually evolving threats. As hackers develop new techniques, AVG is there to automatically provide the latest protection, giving you the peace of mind to go online and use your computer freely.

Price

AVG offers protection for multiple PCs at a reasonable price. They are competitive with other antivirus companies. The following prices are for 1 year subscriptions which offer automatic virus updates throughout the subscription term. AVG also offers a 2 year subscription for a substantial discount.

1 Year Protection Subscription:

1 PC 3 PCs 5 PCs 10 PCs
$39.99 $54.99 $84.99 $139.99

You can easily download AVG Antivirus 2017 from their website (www.avg.com). If you would like, they also offer a backup CD for an additional $9.99. AVG offers you a 30-day, 100% money back guarantee, which is nice considering most antivirus companies don't offer this.

Features

AVG has a nice array of features included standard with their antivirus software. Using their "Community Protection Network" along with their cloud technology, your computer is kept up-to-date against the latest malware threats (See "Protection Level" below for more info). AVG also features social networking protection where they monitor links exchanged within sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace in real-time so that you and your friends are safe. Many times you unknowingly and unintentionally distribute malware to your friends through these sites, but AVG is there to protect you.

AVG includes a game mode that provides non-stop protection while you are using full screen programs like when playing a game. Scheduled scans and updates will be put on hold and performed later to give you the best experience when playing games or watching movies.

AVG also has an App section where you can link all you AVG software together, such as your mobile antivirus protection. It offers a PC Analyzer which will scan your PC for errors affecting its performance and allow you a one-time "AVG PC Tuneup" fix. You could purchase their "AVG PC Tuneup" software separately for unlimited fixes.

AVG's advanced settings allow you to customize many aspects of your scanning and protection. The advanced user will really like this feature and the amount of control they have. AVG is also available in 22 languages.

Ease of Use

AVG installs easily and updates itself right after installation. All the major protection features are viewable and configurable from the main screen with one click. The user interface is organized well, responsive, and easy to navigate. Although we like AVG's user interface layout, we don't like how they show you features that are included in an upgraded version, which when you click on them, take you to screen to download and purchase these add-on features.

The status of each protection component is clearly displayed on the main screen. AVG shows you whether a component is Active or Disabled. In addition, your computer's overall protection status is displayed at the top of the main screen showing a green check when you are protected, a yellow exclamation point when you are not fully protected, and a red "X" when a threat is found. You can easily fix all problems with AVG's auto-fix feature by clicking on the "Fix All" button at the top right of the main screen. With one click, all the problems on your system will be fixed, which is a very user-friendly feature, especially for the novice user.

Protection Level

AVG offers multi-layered protection from all the latest viruses, worms, Trojans, and malware. They have a very advanced antivirus scanner, along with an anti-spyware scanner which protects you from spyware and adware that can steal your personal information. Their "Resident Shield" technology provides an additional layer of protection by examining files as they are opened and copied to stop you from opening or moving infected files. This technology uses advanced heuristic algorithms to find new threats. Using AVG's "Protective Cloud Technology" and "Community Protection Network", emerging threats are identified both in the cloud, and by collecting the latest information from other AVG users. Updates to AVG's virus definitions are then quickly sent to your computer automatically giving you superior protection.

AVG will also scan your incoming and outgoing emails to prevent malware from spreading. A nice feature is that they can add a message to your emails letting you know that they were scanned and certified clean. Your online social networking is also protected by scanning sites you visit for potential threats. AVG allows you to surf and search the web safely with their "LinkScanner Search-Shield" and "LinkScanner Surf-Shield" technologies. This protection displays safety ratings next to each link in your search engine results from Google, Yahoo!, Bing, and other popular search engines to alert you to possible malicious websites. The "AVG Online Shield" checks files before you download them and ensures your online chats and IMs are also safe.

AVG also protects you from rootkits and allows you to manually perform rootkit scans which is a nice protection option. AVG also scans for tracking cookies and malware attempting to steal your identity while working online or emailing.

AVG receives good scores from AV Test (www.av-test.org) and AV Comparatives (www.av-comparatives.org) independent real world antivirus protection tests. These are two very respected, independent antivirus test groups. AVG detected most threats and did a good job at repairing damages caused by these threats. AV Test indicated that AVG's protection against widespread malware in particular was very good.

AVG also received an ADVANCED rating, from AV Comparatives for their effectiveness in everyday real world protection and threat removal. During AV Comparatives testing only 54 of 1898 threats were not detected giving AVG a good detection rating. AVG had absolutely no wrongly blocked files or programs, giving it the highest rating by AV Comparatives for that category.

Performance

AVG's intelligent and lightweight smart scanning technology operates in a high-priority mode when you're away from your PC but reduces scanning when you are using your computer. It can also be configured to scan the files most likely to be infected, greatly reducing system resource use. AVG performed well in our tests and didn't cause a noticeable slow down in our system. AVG also has very small update files which use little bandwidth and don't interfere with your online surfing.

It still makes sense to set AVG to perform full systems scans in the early morning hours when your computer is most likely not in use. AVG receives very good scores from AV Test and the highest score from AV Comparatives showing it performs very well.

Windows 7 83%
Windows XP 83%

Customer Support

AVG has a great support site with an online knowledge base, user forum, and video tutorials. They have many specific virus removal tools which can be downloaded to remove some particularly bad viruses. They offer a free Rescue CD or USB drive download which can be used to remove infections if your system can't boot up. We recommend creating this rescue disk as soon as you install AVG in case some future threat prevents your computer from booting up. AVG's support staff is friendly and quick to answer any questions you may have. They are available via phone, email, and live chat (24/7). They also offer remote support for your PC where one of their experts will login remotely and fix your computer.

I've used AVG for years and have been very satisfied with their basic (and free) service. I can always upgrade if needed, but the free service seems to work really well. They also make an app for your phone, which I use and am happy with as well. I used 3 stars for Customer Support - I've never contacted them so I don't know if they are responsive.

I had avg and it worked well at first then it allowed a hacker in and did not notify me! In addition it failed to detect viruses that had infiltrated my pc. So I will never use avg anymore! I switched to #1 Bitdefender and all has been smooth ever since!
