Avira Antivirus Pro 2017 Review

Avira Top 10 Best Antivirus

Avira Antivirus Pro 2017 gives you the freedom to email, socialize, and browse the web safely. Avira is one of the best at combining protection and performance into well designed antivirus software. You can't go wrong with Avira with great security for one of the best prices out there.

Price

Avira has pricing options like most other antivirus companies, however, they will protect you for a better price than most other antivirus companies. They have a range of options if you need protection for more than 1 PC. The following prices are for 1 year subscriptions which offer automatic virus updates throughout the subscription term. Avira also offers 2 and 3 year subscriptions for a discount.

1 Year Protection Subscription:

1 PC 3 PCs 5 PCs
$51.99 $46.99 $72.99

You can easily download Avira Antivirus Pro 2017 from their website (www.avira.com).
If you would like, they also offer a backup CD for an additional $12.95. They sign you up for automatic renewals during checkout so be sure to remove this if you don't want your subscription to be automatically renewed the following year. A simple click in your shopping cart can change your subscription to manual renewals.

Features

If you are looking for highly configurable antivirus software, Avira is for you. They offer many nice features while being one of the least expensive programs around. They have a nice detection list feature which shows you the names of viruses and malware found by Avira. Avira will scan your boot records making sure that malware has not damaged your computer's ability to boot your operating system.

With Avira you can create a rescue CD by downloading some extra files. This is a great feature and we recommend making a rescue CD as soon as you install Avira in case your computer happens to be infected by some serious malware and can't boot your operating system. You have the ability to customize the threat scan categories and alerts presented to you. This is a nice feature for advanced users, although we recommend that novice users make sure to scan all threat categories which is the default setting. All of Avira's settings are accessible when using their expert mode configuration. Novice users should just leave the expert mode off, knowing they are being protected very well.

They also have a gamer mode which suspends unnecessary notifications during games and movies. Avira also offers laptop/netbook support which assures fast performance even on low resolution, low memory laptops. Avira will also block the auto start function for programs helping to prevent malware from automatically installing itself on your system.

A nice feature that Avira offers is their reporting feature which includes reports on system activity, malware found, and Avira actions taken. You have the ability to see everything Avira is doing to your system. They also offer a virus information screen showing known viruses and detailed information about them including when the virus was discovered and its danger level.

Ease of Use

When you install Avira, it checks for incompatible software and alerts you. It can also remove most incompatible software automatically, so from installation to every day use, Avira is simple and easy. After installation, Avira will allow you to activate their AHeAD heuristics technology and pick your detection level (See "Protection Level" for more info). You can also choose which threats to protect against and your protection start mode during installation. So while Avira might have a bit more initial configuration than other antivirus software, the novice user only needs to select the default settings and know they are thoroughly protected. The advanced user will enjoy all the configuration possibilities. Avira offers a highly configurable protection system with a user interface that is well thought out and easy to follow. Popup messages are kept to a minimum with updates and scanning occurring automatically in the background.

Your computer's status is displayed in the main screen showing a green check when everything is good, a yellow exclamation point when something needs attention, and a red "X" when an error is found. You can easily fix problems by clicking on the "Fix problem" button on the main screen. A window will popup showing you the problems so you can choose exactly which problems to fix.

Protection Level

Avira detects and protects you from all the latest threats including viruses, worms, Trojans, rootkits, spyware, and malware. It also protects you from identity theft by watching out for phishing attacks and other scams. If you regularly surf the web, use email, IM or socialize online, you could be putting yourself at risk of online threats and malware. Avira offers real-time protection against these threats. It stops you from landing on malicious websites. It's "AntiDrive-by" technology blocks unexpected malware downloads while you browse the web. Avira will scan all your incoming emails and has the ability to scan your outgoing emails as well for threats. This will prevent you from unknowingly spreading malware to your friends and family that you email often.

Avira's "AHeAD (Advanced Heuristic Analysis and Detection) Technology" uses advanced heuristic methods to inspect unfamiliar code for suspicious signs and prevent 0-day threats from infecting your computer. This technology can be adjusted to perform aggressive scans or only perform a low detection level scan, again demonstrating just how Avira is nicely configurable. Avira also offers the new "ProActive" scanning which is behavior-based and discovers unknown threats by tracking their actions. Unfortunately, this technology is only available on 32-bit versions of their software. Avira is one of the only antivirus programs to offer Ipv6 support for online threat protection. Ipv6 is the newest IP protocol that computers use for communicating with each other and over the internet.

Avira receives descent scores from AV Test (www.av-test.org) and AV Comparatives (www.av-comparatives.org) independent real world antivirus protection tests. These are two very respected, independent antivirus test groups. Avira detected most threats and did a good job at repairing damages caused by these threats. AV Test indicated that Avira's protection against new malware in particular was very good.

Avira also received an ADVANCED rating, from AV Comparatives for their effectiveness in everyday real world protection and threat removal. During AV Comparatives testing only 34 of 1898 threats were not detected giving Avira a good detection rating.

AV Test Scores:

Windows XP 83% 83%

Performance

While Avira has improved their performance with their latest version of their software, they get about average ratings. They have improved the prioritization for their system scanning so it doesn't significantly slow down your computer. We didn't see any noticeable slow down in our tests while their background scans were working. Their user interface is also very responsive.

It still makes sense to set Avira to perform full systems scans in the early morning hours when your computer is most likely not in use. Avira receives respectable scores from AV Test and the highest score from AV Comparatives showing it performs very well.

AV Test Scores:

OS Usability (Performance)
Windows 7 75%
Windows XP 67%

Customer Support

Avira software is highly configurable but still easy to use. Its nice to know that if you run into trouble though, Avira's knowledgeable support staff will be there to answer your questions. They are based all around the world and available via phone and email (24/7), and offer a slightly different version of live chat. They have a "support customer module" that you download and install which gives you live access to their support team. Avira also has an extensive online knowledge base, user forum, and video tutorials. They have a support tools section which offers some very nice tools including bootsector repair, anti-rootkit and a rescue system tool to repair PCs which cannot be booted anymore.
