Features

ESET is great for novice antivirus users as it has a simple design and straight-forward features. ESET has the smallest program size and runs seamlessly in the background scanning your files, emails, and monitoring your online activity.

ESET has a removable media control to prevent malware from entering your system through USB flash drives or CDs and DVDs. It also uses a cloud-enhanced whitelisting enabling faster, more accurate malware detection using the ESET Live Grid technology (See the "Protection Level" section below for more info). ESET has a gamer mode feature that will suspend pop-up notifications and scheduled scanning tasks during full screen mode programs such as playing games and watching movies. It also includes a laptop mode feature which reduces scanning resources when running on battery power enabling longer laptop use.

ESET also includes internet security training as part of its software, teaching you tips and techniques to make your online experience even safer. ESET offers the ability to create a bootable rescue disk using a CD, DVD, or USB flash device to allow booting into a secure environment for removing particularly bad malware.

ESET also features the "ESET SysInspector" which analyzes your system's files, registry keys, running processes, network configuration, and scheduled tasks to determine which aspects of your system are at risk. The SysInspector then gives you a detailed output of the risky components so you can fix them.

System Requirements:

OS: Windows 2000 Sp4, Windows XP Sp3, Windows Vista Sp2, Windows 7
CPU: Intel or AMD Processor (x86-x64)
Hard Drive Space: 50MB Free Space

Ease of Use

For the home user that doesn't want to worry about their antivirus software, ESET is the best choice. There is virtually no setup as ESET picks all the best configuration settings during installation. The user interface is very simple and powerful with navigation buttons on the left side and uncomplicated protection status indicators on the right. There are some more advanced options should you choose to take more control of your ESET configuration, but it is not necessary. ESET also offers statistics on protection status, file and network activity and running processes which are clear and concise.

ESET indicates your system's protection status in the user interface home screen. This shows a green check when you have maximum protection, a yellow exclamation point when there is a security notification, and a red exclamation point when a problem or threat is found. The problem is listed in the main screen and with a single click ESET can usually fix the problem automatically.

Protection Level

ESET offers proactive threat detection using their unique "Live Grid" technology which provides ESET Virus Lab specialists with an accurate snapshot of global malware threats. When an unknown malware threat is detected on an ESET user's PC, the threat signature and behavior are relayed to the Live Grid so ESET can determine the nature of the threat, then quickly provide other ESET users with updated threat detection database signatures. This effectively stops the threat from becoming a major problem, while also proactively protecting your system.

ESET will proactively scan your PC in the background with virtually no noticeable impact to your system. It scans your emails and web traffic in real-time. Using its ThreatSense technology, ESET will also scan for rootkits, which can be very hard to detect, and protect your online privacy and help prevent identity theft. Using its Host-Based Intrusion Prevention System (HIPS), ESET blocks unauthorized changes to programs usually caused by malware that has installed itself onto your system without you knowing. You can configure rules to allow certain programs to perform changes to your system while all other programs, including information about malware, are prevented from making changes.

We would have liked to see ESET receive some higher scores from AV Test (www.av-test.org) and AV Comparatives (www.av-comparatives.org) independent real world antivirus protection tests. These are two very respected, independent antivirus test groups. AV Test indicated that ESET is right about in the middle of the pack when it comes to protection and repair and still performs better than a lot of antivirus software programs.

ESET received an ADVANCED rating, from AV Comparatives for their effectiveness in everyday real world protection and threat removal. During AV Comparatives testing 47 of 1898 threats were not detected. Although this rating is not as high as some other antivirus software we tested, this is still a very respectable score given the speed at which ESET scans.

AV Test Scores:

OS Protection Repair
Windows 7 58% 42%
Windows XP 67% 42%

Performance

ESET actually has the smallest program size of all the antivirus software programs we tested and as you would expect, it runs extremely fast both during on-demand scanning and automated background protection.

It still makes sense to set ESET to perform full systems scans in the early morning hours when your computer is most likely not in use. ESET receives the highest rating for performance of any tested antivirus software. This rating makes ESET very attractive to the simple home user looking for an easy antivirus solution that does not interfere with their computer use.

AV Test Scores:

OS Usability (Performance)
Windows 7 83%
Windows XP 92%

Customer Support

ESET software is the simplest we've seen. Even with a simple interface and easy to configure setup, additional support is needed sometimes. ESET offers a variety of support options including phone support based in California (6AM-6PM PST), online support tickets (24/7), an online knowledge base, user forum, and video tutorials. Sadly they do not offer live chat support, but still have a lot of information on their support site. They also offer an online virus scanner and special malware removal tools to remove those really stubborn viruses and malware.
