SugarSync is one of the most versatile and comprehensive online backup and syncing solutions we have tested to date. They offer the broadest range of syncing features and support syncing to more devices than any other online backup service. SugarSync is an industry leader when it comes to secure cloud storage and provides a great value for a wide range of computer users.
SugarSync offers the most comprehensive syncing capability for a good value. If you signup for a 1 year subscription, you can save even more money. Although if you have a lot of data (>100GB) to backup, this may not be the most economical solution for you.
1 Year Subscription Plan:
|$ 8.33 / mo||$8.33 / mo||$12.50 / mo||$20.83 / mo||$33.33 / mo|
Monthly Subscription Plan:
|$4.99 / mo||$9.99 / mo||$14.99 / mo||$24.99 / mo||$39.99 / mo|
You can easily signup and download the SugarSync software from their website (www.sugarsync.com). They do offer an industry leading 5GB free solution. Use the 5GB of storage space as long as you would like, however, if you want more storage space you will need to signup for one of the plans listed above. They do offer a 30-day free trial with one of the upgraded plans.
SugarSync has an amazing list of features included with their storage plans. They are probably best known for their syncing capabilities and ability to work with a wide range of mobile devices including iPhone, iPad, Android, Blackberry, Windows Mobile, and Symbian. They offer all the features you have come to expect from online backup services.
One cool feature SugarSync offers is a Microsoft Outlook plugin. This plugin allows you to send links to large files in your email instead of the files themselves. Your email recipient can then click on the link and download the file from your cloud storage. You can also share your files with public links on Facebook, Twitter, or IM, and keep track of how many users download your files. You have the ability to later disable those links so the recipient not longer has access to the file.
SugarSync is slightly different than some other online backup services in that it is all about syncing. This means that you don't have to configure the software to perform automatic backups at certain times. Your files are continuously backed up to SugarSync's cloud storage as well as your other devices. If you change a file on your desktop PC, it is then immediately copied to your cloud storage and other devices, you don't have to do anything! SugarSync allows you to configure which folders will sync and to which devices. This is nice if, for example, your mobile phone doesn't have as much storage as your home PC.
SugarSync also allows you to seamlessly sync files between your Windows PC and Mac!
Another cool feature is the web file archive. This is a location for backing up and storing files online with no syncing or updates. These files will still be accessible from the web and your mobile devices.

Ease of Use
SugarSync is very intuitive and easy to use. The desktop application as well as the mobile apps are well thought out and easy to navigate. The software and apps download and install quickly. Once you choose folders and devices to sync, SugarSync runs in the background without any user intervention. Just set it up and forget about it. Streaming music and videos from your desktop to your mobile devices is very quick and easy. SugarSync also has a "Getting Started" section of your online account webpage. This section will show you some neat features of SugarSync and walk you through them. You can earn an extra 125MB of storage space for each feature you try out.
It is also very easy to share a folder as a photo album. Share your entire Pictures folder or just a specific folder and allow your friends and family to view your pictures. SugarSync integrates with the system context menu, so adding a folder to SugarSync is as simple as right-clicking on the folder and clicking "SugarSync". SugarSync will also give you helpful hints the first time you use a new feature. Based on our testing, it is clear that SugarSync spent a lot of time making their software and apps very simple to use.
At first, SugarSync takes a while to sync all of your files to all your devices. However, once the initial sync is done, subsequent updates and syncing is very fast. This is because SugarSync is constantly syncing your files as soon as you change them. This prevents large uploads of files which could happen if you only backup once a day or once a week. Remember, when backing up or syncing, you are "uploading" first, then downloading to your other devices. By constantly syncing files, small amounts of data are uploaded with each change which makes your files appear to be synced instantaneously. If one of your devices happens to be offline and you make changes to some files, then those changes will sync with your online cloud storage and your other devices the next time you are online.
SugarSync provides data security you can count on. They follow the industry best practices to keep your files safe and secure. All your files are encrypted on their storage servers using 128-bit AES, the same encryption used by banks and the federal government. They also transfer your files to all your devices using Transport Layer Security (TLS) (SSL 3.3), the industry standard for secure web communications. You are also able to password-protect your folders when you share them with friends, family, or co-workers. Judging by all this protection, we feel that SugarSync takes security very seriously.
We found SugarSync offers a nice array of help and support options. They offer email and live chat support. They also have community forums and video tutorials on their support page. They have a nice listing of support categories on their help page including categories for the myriad of mobile devices they support. We were a little disappointed to learn that phone support costs an additional $99.99/year for individual accounts. However, phone support is included with business subscriptions. That being said we were happy with the responses we got from the live chat support and the email questions we asked were answered within a couple hours.

|I've been a SugarSync user for nearly 6 years. It wasn't keeping up with the features and space at a reasonable price with its competitors. So just after renewal, I cancelled. First, they don't tell you, they just charge your credit card. Canceling isn't effective until the term expires (in a year if you try right after renewal). No refunds are allowed. Beware!|
